The best interviewing questions for a top digital marketing candidate
You aren’t sure how to differentiate a top performer in an interview. Below,
we’ve listed 10 interview questions to get you started in finding a top digital
marketing candidate. We’ve separated the questions into 5 categories to give
you a well-rounded view of the candidate – from their motivations to most
1. HOW DID YOU GET INTO DIGITAL MARKETING?
Ask candidates about how they got into digital marketing and you will be able to learn about what motivated them to
Choose this as a career path and ultimately their future goals as a digital marketer. You can then determine whether or not their goals and motivations fit in with your company’s business goals and direction.
2. WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT A COMPANY?
It’s a good idea to ask a candidate about what gets them excited about working with a company. A candidate can still be successful without being passionate about a role, but if they’re not passionate about a company, they’re more likely to leave.
3. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CURRENT BRAND’S TONE OF VOICE AND VISUAL IDENTITY?
A digital marketer has many responsibilities – content strategy, SEO, social media, and the list goes on. Since many of these digital channels are used to communicate a brand’s positioning and purpose, it’s important for a candidate to know how to build a brand and keep messaging cohesive. Ask questions around branding to make sure the candidate can build and strengthen your brand and that they know the tools and strategies to do so.
4. WHAT STRATEGIES HAVE YOU USED TO BUILD A BRAND OVER TIME AND HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOUR MESSAGING IS COHESIVE?
Ask questions about how the candidate plans to build your brand and what tools and strategies they will use to do so. A top digital marketer will be able to strengthen your brand’s identity through copy, voice, and images and know that different messaging should be used across different digital channels.
5. WHAT ARE SOME COMMON SEO MISTAKES IN DIGITAL CONTENT PRO-DUCTION?
Many SEOs don’t know how to determine good from bad advice. This is where you want to find out the quality of the knowledge they have. As with other questions, don’t let them get away with the obvious. Look for something deeper and give them the opportunity to ex-plain why they believe certain SEO actions may cause more harm than good.
6. WHAT IS YOUR PLAN FOR MANAGING OUR SEO?
If you want to earn a top search ranking on Google, it’s going to take time, attentiveness, great content, and someone who knows the right tactics. The candidate should have a plan to manage your SEO on a daily basis, as well as what role content will play in the strategy. Ultimately, they should be able to determine where the best gains are to be had at any given time and focus on those.
7. WHICH INDUSTRY OR JOB RELATED ORGANIZATION DO YOU BELONG? WHAT IS THE EXTEND OF YOUR PARTICIPATION? WHAT DO YOU GET OUT OF IT?
A desire for lifelong learning is one of the most important traits a successful digital marketer can have, so it’s important to look for someone who is eager to grow and learn. A great example of this is a candidate who not only be-longs to a job-related organization, but who holds a leadership position or is an active member in the organization.
8. HOW DO YOU KEEP INFORMED ON WHAT’S GOING ON IN THE MARKETING INDUSTRY? WHAT IMPORTANT CHANGES ARE GOING ON NOW AND IN YOUR OPINION, ARE THEY GOOD OR BAD?
Marketing trends change every day and knowing what’s coming around the corner and evolving your company alongside those changes can keep you competitive. Look for candidates who take advantage of industry research and trends reports, regularly follow marketing influencers, and who use different tools and analytics systems to identify the direction trends are heading.
9. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN IN THE PAST? HOW DID YOU MEASURE THE SUCCESS? HOW DID YOU IMPROVE THE CAM-PAIGN ALONG THE WAY?
Just because a digital marketer tracks stats during a campaign, doesn’t mean they understand what to do with them. When talking to candidates, make sure to ask them data-driven questions that not only show how well a campaign performed, but also what changes they made to the campaign, or future campaigns, based on the results.
10. WHAT ‘S THE ROI FOR THAT SPECIFIC CAMPAIGN? HOW DID YOU FIND THE ROI?
Return on investment (ROI) is an important part of digital marketing – it tells you whether you’re getting your money’s worth from your marketing campaigns. How a candidate measures ROI should be tied to revenue and profits but also include soft metrics like impressions, website visitors, and downloads – which help tell a more complete story.
